video baby monitors are here to stay and are becoming a must have item for most parents. They are also becoming much more technologically advanced in their functions and features. Many offer features such as talk-to-baby intercom, temperature sensor, nightlight, voice activation mode, lullabies, connection to TV, Skype, internet, iPad etc. Sounds like a toy for the boys? Well yes, but in a good way as this means that father's too can keep an eye of on their little bundle of joys just as much as mother's.
Apart from being able to see your baby during the day, to me the most important reason for having a video baby monitor is to help sleep deprivation. As you know after the initial euphoria of having a baby has worn off, and it does, reality bites with parents losing much needed sleep. This is confirmed by a recent survey undertaken by Oricom, an Australian baby monitor brand who revealed that out of 128 people surveyed, over half were losing over an hour's sleep a night and practically all the rest losing nearly two hours. It turns out that at least one in five parents spend over two hours checking on their sleeping baby with dad's also having to do their share.
With parents getting up numerous times during the night, what tends to happen is what should be a truly happy time turns out to be a bit of a nightmare as sleep deprivation can turn any sane person into a bundle of nerves.
This is where having a video baby monitor comes into its own. Not only can you hear your baby's sounds but you can also see them at the same time. Most video baby monitors come with automatic black and white night vision so you can see your baby in a darkened room and at night. And when it comes time for you to sleep you can turn your video monitor off and switch on the voice activation alert (available on many models), usually sensitive enough to pick up the slightest whimper which then turns the video on so you can see if baby is in distress without you having to get up.
